Friends of Eastport United Methodist,
Throughout the week we have been monitoring the news about COVID-19, considering many options, and keeping foremost in mind the safety and health of our community. After some deep prayer, I have decided to err on the side of caution and as of March 15, cancel all activities of the church for the next two weeks, or until otherwise noted.
This means no in-person Sunday morning worship, handbell practice, choir practice, committee meetings, lenten services (afternoon and evening), Homework and Reading program, etc. will be canceled. The office will remain open and staffed during usual hours. However, if you need something from the office, we encourage you to call or email instead of coming to the building.
We are asking that all facility users comply with this request. (Colonial Nursery School has already initiated their temporary closure).
My hope is for us to return together for Sunday morning worship on March 29th, but we will reassess as needed.
I know there are a range of emotions about our situation from fear to frustration. In the midst of those many emotions, I hope that we will also lean on faith in these times, especially our faith’s call to care for the most vulnerable. In times like this, it is the responsibility of the healthy to look out for the vulnerable. I know that by taking this precaution as a community, we can reduce the risk of illness significantly.
In the meantime, I hope that you will do the following:
Pray for those affected by the virus
Pray for and look for ways to care for students for whom school closing means not getting a reliable meal that day. Be on the lookout for ways you can contribute to their wellbeing.
Pray for the healthcare workers, including UMCOR partners, who are working overtime and putting themselves at risk to care for the rest of us.
Pray for those whose work may be impacted during this time and if possible, find a way to support them.
If you or someone in your family is ill, please notify me or the church office.
The building may be closed, but we are still the Church together.
As such, on Sunday morning at 10 am, I invite you to join me in worship in a slightly different way than usual. I encourage you, while at home, to turn to our website: eastportumc.org/worship
There you will find a link to a special worship service for you (and your family) to engage with at home. A bulletin will also be provided so you may follow along. I look forward to worshipping with you then.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Chris
